For example, if you have an 80 amp CYC X12 controller, a battery rated for 180 amps can provide over double the required current.

A battery doesn't push current; rather, the motor’s controller pulls the necessary current from the battery based on demand. Even with a battery capable of delivering 1,000,000 amps, your ebike will only draw what it needs to function efficiently.

A high current battery reduces the stress on your system. In the previous example, since the battery only needs to provide 44% of its rated capacity (80 amps from 180 amps), it operates more efficiently. Lower demand prevents overheating, ensuring better performance during rides and extending battery life. For instance, if conventional batteries typically last 500 cycles, a high current battery may last up to 700-1,000 cycles and even much longer with Molicel's new P50B cell, giving you a noticeable return on investment.

The Hidden Dangers of Voltage Sag: Protecting Your eBike Battery and Ride


Extreme voltage sag is more than just an inconvenience; it's detrimental to your battery and your ride. When your battery's voltage sags, the cells are exerting significant effort to deliver the required current. This internal resistance in cells generates heat, which is detrimental to your battery.


  • Overheating batteries leads to a shortened lifespan and potential irreversible damage.


  • Voltage sag can also result in unwarranted power cutoffs during the mid and lower voltage phases of the battery cycle, causing unexpected ebike shutdowns that necessitate restarting.


Here's a quick example:

A 52v battery operates between 58.8v and approximately 42v. At 41-42 volts, the BMS (battery management system) will cut off the current, as it is designed to prevent discharges below the safe voltage threshold.


Imagine your battery experiences a voltage sag of 7-8v. You're mid-ride, and your battery shows 50v (ample range left, right?). You start ascending a steep hill, throttle hard, and suddenly your motor shuts off. Worst-case scenarios flood your mind as you inspect your bike.

Everything seems fine, so you restart your display, and the bike powers up as if nothing happened. Confused, you continue riding. Perhaps you ease off the throttle, or maybe you don't. Your motor cuts out a few more times until you reach home and start searching for answers online.


The most common explanation for this scenario is that at ~50v, voltage sag temporarily drops the battery's voltage to or below the BMS's cutoff. At this low level, the BMS halts all output. The voltage starts to rebound as soon as there is no load on the battery, allowing you to restart your display. These cutouts often occur at the worst moments, like merging into traffic or climbing steep hills, when your motor demands more current.


All batteries experience some voltage sag, but minimizing it enhances your riding experience and extends your battery's life by reducing strain.

Now, let's discuss cell connections in high-current batteries. Current flows through connections between cells. Most batteries use spot-welded connections with nickel strips. However, some inferior batteries use nickel-plated steel strips, which are poor conductors. While nickel is decent, copper is about 4.5 times more conductive.


That's why we use 0.5mm Copper Bus Bars, spot-welded to each cell. For comparison, most battery packs use 0.15mm-0.2mm nickel strips. To match our bus bars' conductivity, you'd need nickel over 2mm thick, akin to a pencil lead's width—bulky, heavy, and challenging to weld onto a cell.

This matters because improper cell connections increase resistance (heat), exacerbating voltage sag and potentially causing severe issues.

Wiring


Now, onto wiring. We use 10-gauge wires for our high-current batteries. Thicker than 12-gauge, this larger wire reduces resistance, keeping the wires cooler and more efficient.
